I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the closed door to my bedroom. I ran my claws through my mane, trying to contain the tumultuous storm that raged inside of me.

I knew what this was, these feelings. I'd been told my whole life that this period of transition would be a celebration, a joyous shift from waiting to true legal adulthood. Finding the one that awoke my osae, the one who would bear my cubs, the one who my life would be intrinsically linked to like two stars caught in each other's gravity, well - this was what everyone dreamed about.

A fire burned in my veins, urging me to find her, to take her, to make her mine with every ounce of vicious possessiveness within me.

I knew what this was.

This was the longing that happened when a mate bond was initiated but not consummated. It would drive me to the very edge of my control, growing worse every moment I spent around her.

All I had to do was stay away.

If we remained physically separate long enough, there was a chance my osae would awaken for another.

I'd known that the moment she bit me back in the zoo that all I had to do was leave her there and walk away.

All I had to do was never see her ever again.

I never dreamed it would happen this way.

My one wasn't my partner. She was still property.

My one wasn't celebrated by my family.

My mother was horrified.

My one wouldn't trigger the easy shift in power from the board that controlled my father's extensive holdings. The moment they found out about her was the moment they knew they could fight fang and claw to maintain their parasitic grip on my inheritance.

My one was an alien.

If I completed the bond by mating with her and we couldn't have cubs - I would lose everything.

I didn't care.

I wanted her either way.

I stared at the door, my muscles tense with the need to go find her, that thought ricocheting through my heart.

Even before my osae awoke, every choice I'd made was to draw her closer, to keep her safe, to stay near her. I'd been drawn to her the moment I saw her crawl out of that crate, filthy and alone. Everything she did was a delight. She had taken my dull world and transformed it with a rainbow of experiences and challenges.

She was the sunshine through the rain, and she changed everything.

She changed everything.

My life was no longer about seizing back control of what my father had spent his life working towards.

It was about her.

Who was she? Where did she come from? What went on in her mind? What would she create when given the freedom, education, and tools?

The thought of walking away and never experiencing the answers to those questions felt like tearing my heart out with my own claws.

I rose to my feet and walked across the room.

The feelings were undeniable. There was nothing I wouldn't give up to be with her.
